How HVAC Zoning Helps You Save on Energy Costs

You can benefit from HVAC zoning if any of the following apply to you: your home is suffering from uneven temperatures, members of your family disagree on what a comfortable temperature is or some rooms are not occupied. But can it actually help you save on energy costs? Home Air Services explains more in this blog.

How HVAC Zoning Works

A typical central HVAC system has an air handler that’s connected to the main unit and controlled by a single thermostat. This means that the temperature, ventilation and humidity settings are the same for all of the rooms in your home. However, there could be instances where some of the rooms feel comfortable while others are either too hot or too cold.

With zoning, any member of your household can adjust the temperature to their liking without affecting the comfort levels of others. Dampers are installed for a ducted HVAC system, each with its own thermostat. Mini-split or ductless HVAC systems can also help you achieve zoning. You can install up to five indoor units in your home, each of which is connected to a single outdoor condenser unit.

How Zoning Helps You Save Money

Zoning your home means each room receives cooling or heating as needed. In other words, your HVAC system will consume energy only as needed. Since you won’t be wasting energy and money to heat and cool every room, you can avoid:

  • Overcooling your home to get the rest of the rooms to feel comfortable enough.
  • Adjusting the thermostat to its highest setting on the first floor in an attempt to cool the upper floor.
  • Arguing over the thermostat.
  • Using your HVAC system to heat and cool unoccupied rooms.

HVAC zoning can help you in more ways than one. If you’re interested in saving money through zoning, give Home Air Services a call. You can do so by calling (301) 585-8100. You may also fill out our  contact form  for a service request.
