If you live in a cold environment, then you probably consider your water heater to be one of your most important appliances. Unfortunately, even with proper care and maintenance, all water heaters will eventually need to be replaced, as they typically only last from 10-15 years. But other than age, how can you tell for sure when you’re due for a replacement? A trusted HVAC contractor shares three telltale signs in this post.
If your water heater is getting on in years, chances are it has a good amount of sediment at the bottom. Over time, this sediment hardens and will start to shift around, causing loud rumbling or gurgling sounds. Needless to say, these noises aren’t good, and could indicate that you should seriously consider getting a new water heater.
If brownish water starts coming from your faucets, it’s due to one of two things: rusty pipes or a rusty water heater. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to pinpoint exactly where that rusty water is coming from. As soon as you notice rusty water, be sure to call in an expert to determine if your water heater needs to be replaced.
If you notice standing water near your water heater, this is definitely a cause for concern. A leaky water heater suggests corrosion has occurred due to sediment build-up or age. Once the tank itself starts to leak, it’s time to replace it, as there’s no way to repair a leaking tank.
