5 Ways to Make Your Furnace Run More Efficiently

Space heating accounts for 45% of all energy bills in the United States. Between 2007 and 2012, the average American household spent more than $700 on natural gas–which is the primary heating fuel of 57% of the population–and over $1,700 on heating oil.

The bottom line is that heating your house is the largest energy expense you’ll ever deal with, so it makes sense to make aure your furnace runs as efficiently as possible. To do so, Home Air Services, one of the leading local  HVAC installation contractors , recommends the five tricks below.

Remove Any Obstructions From the Registers-  Obstructed registers can make your furnace think that there’s not enough warm air when there really is. Furniture and dust are two of the most common causes of blockages. Also, the use of decorative registers can decrease air circulation by up to 50%.

Make Sure the Filter Isn’t Clogged-  A dirty filter can suffocate your furnace. To ensure that your HVAC system receives an adequate amount of air to heat, maintain your filter accordingly.

Program Your Thermostat-  If you don’t have a programmable thermostat yet, most  HVAC companies  would advise you to upgrade sooner rather than later. But if you already have one, make it a point to use its programmable feature to trigger your furnace to produce enough warm air based on demand on its own.

Turn on the Ceiling Fans-  Run your ceiling fan in reverse to circulate the warm air produced by your furnace about the room without producing a breeze. There should be a switch on the body of the fan that can change the direction the blades turn.

Schedule Regular Inspections-  The most effective furnace and  air conditioning repair  is the one that’s scheduled before the need for it becomes apparent. Not all problems with your HVAC equipment will cause the system to break down, but each one can reduce the efficiency of your heating unit. Having a planned maintenance program in place allows for timely furnace tune-ups.
