Avoiding Common HVAC Scams

Your HVAC system is one of the most important components of your home, which makes repairing and replacing these units a bit on the expensive side. Unfortunately, there are those who have bad intentions that know this and make a living setting up fraudulent schemes to take advantage of homeowners.

As one of the top  HVAC companies  in the DC Metropolitan area, Home Air Services has seen how such people operate and know the tricks they use. In this post, we share how to recognize and avoid these HVAC scams.

Extra-Large HVAC Units

When it comes to heating and air conditioning, an oversized system is definitely not always the best option. Not all homeowners know this, however, which is why scammers often push them to get larger units than they need since installing them is more expensive and they can charge more for the work. Installing an oversized unit is a bad idea, as it’s more difficult to gauge the recommended run time of a larger unit, and they often short cycle as well.

To avoid this, it’s important to have a load calculation done before installing a new system to avoid an oversized unit that may not be efficient enough for your home.

Pressure Tactics

Another common method that scammers use to prey on homeowners is the tried-and-true scare tactic. You’ll recognize this when the contractor in question pressures you with an extreme sense of urgency to employ their services in order to repair or replace your unit immediately. More often than not, the service they’re offering is something your unit likely doesn’t even really need.

This tactic is commonly used by fly-by-night contractors that offer prices that often seem too good to be true–because they are. You can easily identify these companies when you ask to see their license and find out that they’re not a local contractor.

Get in touch with your local  HVAC installation contractors  if you feel your unit needs a checkup. Local companies like us are trained and licensed for operating in the DC area’s unique climate and weather conditions.
