How to Make Your Air Conditioner Summer-Ready

Nothing is more inconvenient than trying to beat the heat of summer with a faulty air conditioner. It can be extremely frustrating when your cooling system acts up when you need it most, and while at times it may seem as if the machine has a mind of its own, but there are some things you can do to mitigate this problem and keep your AC from breaking down at the worst possible time.

As one of the leading local HVAC companies in the area, Home Air Services shares what you can do to ensure that your air conditioner is ready when summer rolls around.

Check That It Works

There’s no better way to tell if your AC is in good shape than to do a test run. Switch it on to see if it will operate properly and efficiently. If it works, use your ears to identify unusual noises, as strange sounds could indicate that something is wrong with the unit.

Moreover, it’s not enough to investigate how your air conditioner operates from the inside; you also need to go outside and listen to the condenser while it’s running. It will probably be loud, but pay attention to any noises that seem out of place, which could suggest a problem for which an air conditioning repair will need to be immediately scheduled.

Rid the Condenser of Debris

Make sure the condenser is free from debris. Any obstruction can keep this outdoor unit from working as it should.

If you want to reduce the chances of debris buildup from here on out, Home Air Services recommends building a fence around the condenser. A barricade can also help reduce the usual noise the unit makes. Just make sure there’s enough clearance between the equipment and the fence to allow for adequate ventilation.

Maintain the Air Filter

Most HVAC installation contractors would attest that proper filter maintenance is key to AC efficiency and longevity. The filter’s job is to protect the internal components of your air conditioner from becoming dirty. When the filter becomes too clogged to allow air to pass through it, your cooling unit won’t be able to breathe and will underperform.
