HVAC Matters: Avoiding the Effects of Snow & Ice

Winter is a season filled not only with holiday cheer, but also a multitude of threats for which homeowners have to be on the lookout. Snow and ice are beautiful to look at and play in, but they can also cause a lot of problems with the continuous operation of your HVAC unit. They can stall or halt the operation of your system, or even outright damage parts that are susceptible to the effects of the cold. How can snow and ice affect your HVAC system, and what things should you keep in mind?  Here  air conditioner maintenance  experts from Home Air Services provide some answers!

Inspect your surroundings.  Keep a sharp eye out for things that are in the vicinity of your HVAC unit. Most homeowners don’t consider the threats the surrounding natural elements, such as trees, pose to their HVAC units, because they otherwise affect the HVAC system very little. But snow can accumulate on the branches of trees hanging over your HVAC unit during the winter, which can eventually break and drop on top of it. Gutters that function well throughout the other seasons can have issues with leaking over the course of winter due to the drastic drop in temperature, causing the water they catch to leak through cracks and trickle down to your HVAC unit, where it will subsequently freeze.

Replace the air filter.  Air filters are essential to the optimal performance of your HVAC unit. Make sure to replace your filter at least once every three months to allow for better heat transference, promote better airflow throughout your house and lessen the strain on your furnace. Air filters are also susceptible to freezing, so always check them to avoid having temperature problems, especially during the winter when guests and relatives frequently visit. If you’re not confident about replacing your air filter on your own, trust only reputable   home heating companies  to handle the inspection and maintenance of your HVAC unit.

Be proactive.  The best way to deal with cold climate problems in regard to your HVAC unit is to avoid having them in the first place. W interizing parts, s cheduling regular annual furnace tune-ups and preventive maintenance and purchasing upgrades for your HVAC system will lessen the risks posed by freezing, deterioration and malfunctioning parts. In general, a system that’s constantly inspected and cared for performs much better and for much longer than a unit that’s only fixed after it breaks down.
