Should You Turn Off Your Heat at Night to Save Energy?

It can be tempting to turn the heat off when you’re about doze off in hopes of saving a few bucks. The truth is, there are plenty of reasons you shouldn’t do this. In this article, one of the leading  HVAC installation contractors , Home Air Services, explains why turning your heat off at night is such a bad idea.

Damaged pipes.  Turning the heat off on a particularly chilly night can cause you to lose money. If temperatures drop below freezing, your pipes could burst and cause expensive water damage. This is because when water freezes, it expands, and with enough swelling your pipes will eventually rupture. This will allow water to escape and flood your home.

Disrupted sleep.  According to  HVAC companies , turning the heat off at night isn’t just uncomfortable, it also causes you to lose out on quality sleep. If you live in an area where winter nights drop to as low as 20 degrees, you can expect indoor temperatures to significantly drop as soon as you turn the heat off. In fact, the colder it is outside and the warmer it is inside, the quicker the temperature will plummet when the heat is turned off.

There Are Smarter Ways to Save Money

A better way to save money on heating expenses is to set the temperature back at least eight degrees for eight hours or longer while you sleep. This also rings true for all the times you’re away during the day. In fact, you can save at least one percent on your heating bill for every degree that you lower your thermostat. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can easily set up schedules with different temperatures throughout the day.
