What Happens if Your Furnace Gets Red-Tagged?

During routine HVAC maintenance, your technician may find a critical problem with your furnace. Thus, they may issue you a red tag. A red-tagged furnace means that your technician has found a safety problem with your unit. Until you repair or replace your furnace, your unit must be shut down to prevent further damage.

In this article, Home Air Services, one of the leading HVAC companies , explains everything you need to know about your red-tagged furnace.

What Are the Different Types of Red Tags?

There are two different types of red tags: Type A and Type B. If you received a Type A red tag on your furnace, it poses a serious safety risk, and you and your family may be in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning or a natural gas leak.

On the other hand, a Type B red tag is more of a warning. It means you’ll need to repair or replace your furnace within a fixed amount of time, or else your gas will be shut off. Your furnace may not be an imminent threat to your safety, but the gas company will still be notified.

Why Did Your Furnace Get a Red Tag?

There are many possible reasons why your furnace received a red tag. If you notice any of the following potential safety issues, be sure to call your  HVAC installation contractors  as soon as possible:

  • Cracked or broken heat exchanger.  The heat exchanger is responsible for transferring heat from the fuel combustion to the air that warms your home. However, if your heat exchanger is damaged, it will allow deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak out of your furnace, which is extremely dangerous for you and your family.
  • Carbon monoxide leaks.  If you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home, it will alarm you in the event of a carbon monoxide leak. If this happens, you must exit your home as soon as possible and call an HVAC professional so they can inspect your furnace.

What Should You Do When Your Furnace Gets Red-Tagged?

You’ll need to call an experienced HVAC technician to fix your furnace. If your heat exchanger is damaged, make sure to have it repaired or replaced immediately. If your furnace is covered by a warranty, you may want to consult the manufacturer to avoid unnecessary costs. However, if the damage is extensive, you may need a new furnace, which will provide better efficiency and performance for your heating system.
