Safety Tips to Keep in Mind When Decorating for Halloween

While many homeowners start decorating for Halloween mid-September, there’s nothing wrong with doing it a week or two before the big day if you’re running a little behind. However, keep in mind that Halloween decorations can interfere with your HVAC system if they’re not put up properly.

To ensure a fun, safe Halloween, Home Air Services, your trusted air conditioner maintenance  company, recommends keeping in mind the following tips when decorating for Halloween:

Avoid putting decorations up near air vents.  Blocked air vents will not only create hot and cold spots, they’ll also increase the strain on your HVAC system. That’s why, as a general rule, there should be at least six inches of clearance around your air vents. This applies to Halloween decorations, furniture and any objects big enough to impede airflow.

Important note: If your air vents and ducts haven’t been cleaned in three years, you should have a local  duct cleaning company  conduct an inspection. Duct systems usually need to be cleaned and inspected every two to five years. If yours haven’t been cleaned in recent years, fall is the best time to schedule an inspection.

Decorate outside.  Instead of putting up decorations all over the house, why not focus your efforts on decorating your porch or your home’s exterior? Creating a dedicated spot for Halloween decorations will not only save you time, it will also reduce the risk of the decorations impeding airflow inside your home.

Important note: Avoid placing Halloween decorations near your HVAC unit’s outdoor condenser unit. If small decorations manage to slip into your condenser, they may damage your HVAC system’s compressor, which is the most expensive component to replace. As a general rule, there should be 12 inches of clearance around your HVAC system’s outdoor unit (or five feet if there are trees above the condenser) to ensure airflow around it isn’t impeded.

Use battery-powered candles.  While candles will give your home a spooky ambiance, they can also pose a safety risk. Not to mention, they generate soot. That’s why it’s better to use battery-powered candles.
