When Is a Sump Pump Necessary?

sump pump being replaced

If you are a homeowner in Washington, D.C., Montgomery County, Howard County or Prince George’s County, Maryland, you may already have a sump pump. If you’re concerned about the reliability of your sump pump, a maintenance visit or replacement could give you peace of mind.

Water damage, flooding and mold can be an extraordinarily expensive hassle. Sump pumps are there to prevent what would otherwise be a regular occurrence.

In fact, any home in the greater D.C. area with a foundation below ground should usually have a sump pump. If you have any concerns about the condition of your sump pump, it’s likely in your best interest to consult with experienced plumbers who have worked on thousands of sump pumps in Rockville and the surrounding areas.

What Is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a plumbing system installed at the lowest point of a building’s basement or crawlspace that drains water. It usually consists of the sump pit and the sump pump.

  • The sump pit is usually built into the foundation of a home or installed with the sump pump. The sump pit is dug below the flooring level of the basement or crawlspace and creates the lowest point in the building for water to collect. Nearby water-using appliances like dishwashers and washing machines may also drain into the sump pit. The sump pit is usually 18 to 24 inches wide and 22 to 36 inches deep.

  • The sump pump takes the water accumulated in the sump pit and discharges it away from the foundation. As water rises in the sump pit, a float switch or pressure sensor activates the pump, which pulls water from the pit out of the home.

Does Your Home Need a Sump Pump?

A sump pump can help reduce potential water damage and flooding. If flooding or ground water seepage is a concern for you, a sump pump is a must. Your sump pump is especially important if your home has:

  • A basement
  • A crawlspace foundation where a sump pump can prevent moisture problems, standing water and mold growth
  • Heavy clay or silt soils which drain slower than sandy soils
  • A yard that slopes toward your foundation where drainage is likely to flow and collect

Moisture can also build up in your basement or foundation if there’s improper drainage, incorrect grading of walkways and plumbing leaks.

What Are Some Signs You May Need Sump Pump Repair or Replacement?

Strange noises: If your sump pump is making unusual noises, such as grinding, banging or rattling sounds, it may indicate that the motor is wearing out or there is debris in the impeller.

Frequent cycling: Short cycling in quick successions may be an indication that the sump pump is struggling to keep up with the amount of water that is entering the pit. This may be due to a malfunctioning float switch, an undersized pump or a clogged discharge line.

Foul odors: If you notice a foul odor coming from your sump pump, it may indicate that there is mold or bacteria growing inside the pit or discharge line. This can be a health hazard and requires immediate attention.

Water leaks: If you notice water leaking from the sump pump, it may be a sign that the discharge pipe or the pit is damaged, or there is a problem with the check valve.

Age: Most sump pumps have a lifespan of seven to 10 years. If your sump pump is nearing the end of its lifespan or has exceeded it, it may be time for a replacement to avoid unexpected failures.
