If your thermostat isn’t reaching the set temperature, there could be a number of causes. In today’s post, the HVAC installation contractors at Home Air Services discuss some of the possible reasons behind this common problem.
Change in settings — This is by far the most common cause. Fortunately, it’s one that can be corrected without needing to call an HVAC technician. It could be that you or someone else entered the wrong settings on the thermostat, or your children may have randomly pressed the buttons. In either case, your first troubleshooting step is making sure the correct temperature and fan settings are set. You should also consider putting the thermostat in a spot when children can’t access it.
Lost Wi-Fi connection — Wi-Fi devices drop their connection occasionally, and Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats are no different. When this happens, your HVAC system may not respond to remote commands. Try resetting your thermostat first. If that doesn’t work, try restarting your router by doing the following: unplug the power adaptor from the back of the modem, then wait 10 seconds before plugging it back in. Wait for the lights on the router to come back on, then try reconnecting to the Wi-Fi network.
The thermostat needs new batteries — HVAC companies like us recommend replacing your thermostat batteries once a year. While the thermostat will still work with a battery with a low charge, it could act erratically or even stop responding completely. The quickest solution is simply to replace the batteries and perform a reset.
The thermostat is installed in a less-than-optimal spot — If your home is heated and cooled by a single HVAC system, (as opposed to an individual mini-split unit in every room), you’ll want to make sure that the thermostat is located in the exact center of the house. This helps ensure that your thermostat is getting as close to an average reading as possible. A capable HVAC technician can calculate the thermostat location relative to the house’s floor plan.
