Improving Indoor Air Quality Requires More Than Plants Alone

Keeping indoor plants–whether at home or in the office–has become a popular method of improving air quality indoors. More recent information, however, suggests that doing so may not be as effective of a solution as we’ve been led to believe. Home Air Services, one of the most trusted local home heating companies , takes a closer look in this post.

Cleaning Indoor Air with Plants

An article entitled “A Study of Interior Landscape Plants for Indoor Air Pollution Abatement”, published by NASA in 1989, asserted that “..plants can play a major role in removal of organic chemicals from indoor air.” The practice of growing indoor plants was believed to help rid the air of “..benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde.” Unfortunately, the effectivity of plants to do the same in real world conditions has since been questioned.

Plants Are Not Enough

A 2018 article by the Harvard Medical School states that, particularly during winter, “Stale indoor air and heating systems can increase the amount of allergy-inducing dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores circulating through your house.” The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website also mentions that, “There is currently no evidence, however, that a reasonable number of houseplants remove significant quantities of pollutants in homes and offices.” While indoor plants may contribute to better indoor air quality, they’re certainly not effective enough to improve it without the help of a high-quality HVAC installation and the services of duct-cleaning companies like Home Air Services.

Going Beyond Indoor Plants

The EPA suggests undertaking proven methods of cleaning air indoors. Making home improvements to promote natural ventilation, as well as installing renewable energy systems, are two such methods. Installing a good HVAC system is another, as doing so can help prevent problems brought about by condensation and mold buildup. Maintaining existing heating and cooling systems and ensuring that they’re working properly and being cleaned regularly is also necessary.

Go beyond the care of indoor plants and make sure that your home or office is properly ventilated with the help of air quality systems and air conditioner maintenance experts.
